St Michael & All Angels
"Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world - he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him." Revelation xii.7-9
St Michael the Archangel is the principal angel and is found in different places in the bible as the main defender of good over evil. Whilst it would be tempting for early Christians to use St Michael as a military Saint, he was in fact a patron of the sick. Nowadays, he has four offices: 1) he fights against Satan; 2) he rescues souls, particularly at the hour of death; 3) he champions God's people; and 4) he brings men's souls to judgement. These important offices are celebrated at a Sung Mass on 29th September.
